America's Culture
after the class discussion on Thursday it seemed clear that many of us deem common American values as matieralistic and for the most part, based around appearance. I think we were forgetting about a lot of the good that this country is based off of though. We forget how many freedoms we have compared to other countries because to us they just seem mundane. Free speech and right to assembly for example are 2 freedoms that most people around the world dont get to practice. Also in class everyone was giving reasons why celebrities arent good role models, but we forget about some of the good they do. We talked about how people only drive hybrids because it's trendy right now, but many of the celebrities are the reason that so many people drive them in California and ultimately this is a very good thing. In addition it seems that whenever a celebrity promotes a charity, more people throw their support to that cause and who's to say that's a bad thing?

I thought this same thing as I was watching "Oprah's Big Give" on Sunday night. I thought to myself there are so many people that dislike Oprah and are looking at this show as a ploy or a publicity stunt. Then I began to ask why this idea of giving and helping others is so offensive to people, why it is a "bad" thing. Have we become accustomed to having an Alterative motive when it comes to giving anf if we have is that a bad thing?
I know what you mean Amy. People do forget that America does a have a lot that other countries don't get. I think the best way to look at it is to say that every country has its flaws. Whether its social, economic, or political, no place on earth is perfect. We should cut ourselves some slack but at the same time (instead of complaining) is do something about it. So if you don't believe in celebrities, don't support them financially (aka buying a tabloid). It all comes back to the individual because that is where the changing of society starts.
